SUMMARY:Exploiting Groundwater Resources in Urban Africa: Understanding Choice and Consequences by Dr Adrian Healy
DESCRIPTION:This is the David Burdon Memorial Lecture delivered as part of the IAH Technical Discussion Meetings. \nAcross much of Africa\, domestic water supplies are increasingly dependent on groundwater reserves. Whilst\, the extent to which groundwater reserves are exploited is often a political choice as well as a technological one\, the role of private actors (such as households and businesses) is increasingly coming to the fore. \nThis nascent shift towards a distributed and increasingly individualised water supply may have implications for the resilience of communities to future environmental shocks\, which are\, as yet\, under-explored. Drawing on the case of Nigeria and new interdisciplinary research\, this lecture addresses that gap\, through a specific focus on understanding the behaviour and choices of individuals and other key stakeholders. \nThe findings offer insights for the delivery of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals\, as well as broader challenges for the sustainable management of groundwater reserves. \nAdrian Healy is a Senior Research Fellow at the Water Research Institute\, Cardiff University. His research interests focus on the resilience of people and places to shocks and crises\, with a particular emphasis on the role of agency and choice in resilience outcomes. His current research themes include exploring the development of groundwater resources in urban Africa and the implications of this for the resilience of communities. He recently completed a major project funded by the UK’s Research Councils examining the burgeoning development of privately-commissioned domestic boreholes in Nigeria. He has acted as an expert advisor to the UK Government\, OECD and the European Commission and is keen to ensure the policy-relevance of research findings.

SUMMARY:Business Model Innovation with Stuart Nelson of Jigsaw Consulting
DESCRIPTION:A business model describes the rationale of how an organization creates\, delivers\, & captures value! \nBusiness models can best be described through nine basic building blocks that show the logic of how a company intends to make money. The nine blocks cover the four main areas of a business: customers\, offer\, infrastructure\, and financial viability. The business model is a blueprint for a strategy to be implemented through organizational structures\, processes\, and systems. The nine business model building blocks form the basis for a handy tool\, which we call the Business Model Canvas \nWhy you should attend? \nToday\, everything is moving faster yet the business environment is more complex. Opportunities to grow are everywhere but are rarely obvious and innovation is key. Organisations need to understand their model and be able to pre-empt their competition. \nThis taster introduces business model thinking and the methods\, techniques and tools used to innovate business models. \nWho should attend? \nEstablished & growing businesses interested in understanding what business models are and how to use business model thinking\, methods and tools to increase their ability to generate revenue.

SUMMARY:WIT Lean Practitioner Seminar Series 2017-2018 - 5th Seminar - The LEAN Maintenance Journey
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar Joe O’Sullivan discusses the identification and implementation of a Lean Maintenance program. Although the application of lean tools\, techniques and thinking has grown in popularity in organisations\, there is limited information on how best to integrate lean thinking into an existing maintenance program. Advances in artificial intelligence and robotics have created challenges for both Lean and Reliability Engineering models. This seminar will explore the benefits of amalgamating Lean and Reliability Engineering and proposes a Lean Maintenance roadmap that arguably could be adopted by any maintenance department. \nAbout the speaker \nJoe O’Sullivan served his time as a Fitter Turner with the Irish Sugar company in the 1980s. As a Maintenance Manager he has coached and mentored teams of maintenance practitioners over the past 20 years in both the electronic and pharmaceutical industries. He currently holds a Master of Business Studies in Lean Practice from Waterford Institute of Technology; a Master of Science Degree in Maintenance Engineering & Asset Management from University of Manchester; a Graduate Diploma in Management from University of Edinburgh; and a Diploma in Management from University of Limerick. He is currently secretary of the Japanese Karate Association of Ireland\, which successfully hosted the World Karate-Do Championships in August 2017. His role model both in business and in his personal life is Stephen R Covey.

SUMMARY:Mid-West Lean Network: Workshop 1 How to Start the Lean Journey
DESCRIPTION:The Mid-West Lean Network is now well established. It was set up to enable companies within the Mid-West region to learn about Lean\, share best practice\, improve their Lean undertakings and to facilitate member-to-member networking. \nWe have learnt in the past year that many companies\, particularly SMEs and the smaller micro enterprises\, have not yet started on their Lean journeys\, either through lack of resources or lack of expertise. \nThis workshop\, the first in our 2018 series\, will start at the very beginning: \n1. Explain what Lean is all about…in any area of a company;\n2. Give case examples (2) of how a company can embrace Lean and;\n3. Highlight the types of support available to adopt and undertake Lean. \nThe Mid-West Lean Network: the second largest regional lean network in Ireland\, after Waterford Institute of Technology’s Lean Enterprise Excellence Group\, was set up in November 2016 to strengthen and increase the existing culture of lean within the Shannon and the wider Mid-West region. Its aim is to enable each industry to broaden and strengthen its competitiveness through knowledge sharing and bench-marking against each other and different industries.

SUMMARY:Certified ScrumMaster from Scrum Alliance
DESCRIPTION:The industry-recognised Certified ScrumMaster Training is the perfect building block to educate and certify your people. Through exercises and peer discussions\, attendees realise how much they rely on habits that lower productivity\, quality\, and return on investment. They also get to experience first-hand how a change to Scrum practises works and feels. \nThrough a mixture of class room study\, exercises\, pair discussions and real-world trainer experiences\, an attendee will learn how a Scrum project works and how to facilitate and coach a Scrum project. Techniques we will investigate include Vision Creation\, the use of the Product Backlog\, Backlog Formatting Techniques\, Story Point Estimation\, and how to use this to formulate a release plan. \nWe’ll learn about how Sprint Backlogs (the lower level of planning in Scrum) can work and we’ll experience it for ourselves in a case study. Many people struggle to get the Daily Scrum ceremony working effectively\, but you won’t – after hearing some of our primers for helping you maximise the benefit for the team from this key principle. \nYou will experience how to coach your team through planning and through the powerful inspect and adapt technique of retrospectives. How to report this information in a clear and simple format is the key objective of Burndown Charts – which we’ll discuss in depth. Finally\, you will discover our learning in how to apply Scrum to an enterprise environment. Scaling and distribution will be the key areas of investigation in this final session. \nWith a course content and delivery technique consistently rated as “Excellent” by our attendees\, our Private and Public CSM options should be considered an essential for any Agile training.
