SUMMARY:Irish Gas Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Irish energy sector is undergoing a transition to a low carbon future. Although much of the focus to date has been on electricity there is now a need to move the policy debate towards the transition of Ireland’s natural gas network to low carbon gas sources. There are an emerging number of elements to the decarbonisation of the natural gas infrastructure including biomethane injection\, carbon capture and storage and power-to-gas hydrogen technologies. This transition will likely be accelerated by the next policy milestone that will be the EU’s Gas Package which is currently being formulated and should be finalised by the new Commission in spring 2020. \nThe objective of this conference is to look at the options for decarbonisation and how they might be applied in an Irish context. Key topics to be discussed include: \n\nThe rationale for decarbonising the gas network;\nEconomics of decarbonising the heat and transport sectors;\nUK plans for its gas network;\nBiomethane injection into the gas network;\nThe future role of hydrogen;\nThe potential for CCS to achieve a zero-carbon gas network.

SUMMARY:International Group for Lean Construction 2019
DESCRIPTION:From the 1st – 7th July 2019 Ireland will host the 27th Annual International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC) Conference. This event promises to be one of the largest IGLC conferences with well over 500 National & International delegates in attendance.  \n\nFounded in 1993\, the IGLC (www.iglc.net) is an international network of researchers from practice and academia in architecture\, engineering\, and construction (AEC) who feel that the practice\, education\, and research of the AEC industry have to be radically renewed in order to respond to the global challenges ahead. \nThe goal of the IGLC is to better meet customer demands and dramatically improve the AEC process as well as the product. To achieve this\, the IGLC are developing new principles and methods for product development and production management specifically tailored to the AEC industry\, but akin to those defining lean production that proved to be so successful in manufacturing. \nThe distinguishing trait of this Group is its emphasis on theory. The IGLC’s view that the lack of an explicit theory of construction has been a major bottleneck for the progress in the AEC field. Conversely\, they assume that the clarification of the theoretical foundation of construction\, along with principles and methods emanating from the new foundation\, would be the most effective means for the renewal of the AEC industry. \n  \nThe IGLC 2019 conference has purposely been structured in a way to engage local Irish industry and provide an understanding of Lean Construction practices in other Countries. \n  \nThe event is broken into 4 primary parts: \n\nWorkshop Day: Monday 1st July/Dublin Castle\nIndustry Day: Tuesday 2nd July/Croke Park\nConference: 3rd\, 4th & 5th July/Croke Park\nSummer School: 6th & 7th July/DUT\n\nThis unique 7 day event will consist of workshops on the leading edge of Lean Project Delivery practices\, keynotes from global leaders and current best practice international & local case studies along with the latest research\, developments and thinking.

SUMMARY:Design Thinking Ireland 2019
DESCRIPTION:Design is a key driver of business success and is “the only way that companies can stand out from the crowd”\, according to a report by management consultancy McKinsey & Company. \nThe 2018 report says that “While design was once largely thought of as a way of making products more attractive\, it is now a way of thinking: a creative process driven by the desire to better understand and meet consumer needs”. \nAt Design Thinking Ireland 2019 you will hear directly from McKinsey and learn how they tracked the design practices of 300 publicly listed companies over a five-year period in multiple countries and industries. One of the key findings of the research report is a strong correlation between high Mc Kinsey Design Index scores and superior business performance. \nOther speakers will include Procter & Gamble (USA)\, Nokia Bell Labs\, Kerry\, Musgrave Retail Partners\, Mastercard\, Jinga Life and many more… \nDuring parallel interactive breakouts you will be able to get a hands-on experience of a range of methodologies including Google Ventures Design Sprint and LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®. \nIRDG has been championing the value of design thinking amongst the business innovation community and this unique national Design Thinking Ireland Conference is their 6th annual flagship event.

The majority of such programmes fail to deliver against objectives due to issues such as lack of strategic alignment within the organization\, over reliance on external consultants and poor programme management approaches. \nThis is a practical and interactive “how-to” workshop based on actual experience and success stories. The workshop includes participant exercises\, case studies and a sharing of real life examples\, with access to information of specialist tools and funding mechanisms to underpin their Lean Programme. \nWho should attend?\nThis one-day programme is designed to equip Senior Managers and Lean Champions with the overall information and tools needed to build their own internal programmes.

SUMMARY:Creating the Lean Mindset - Leadership\, Employee Engagement & Team Learning
DESCRIPTION:With Lean and Change journeys\, implementation is a challenge\, sustaining change even more so. Getting the culture and climate right is critical to sustaining improvements. To do this we need to create a climate where an innovation culture can flourish. This is a climate where team members all have a Lean Mindset in a Psychologically Safe environment. \nThis workshop will walk you through the 3 behaviour pillars of this culture\, The Leader\, The Individual\, and the Team. We will show you how it is measured\, and how each impacts the other\, all based on substantial research undertaken. \nIn this two-day workshop\, we focus on the behaviour change that is required for organisational change. This is not management skills training but a workshop of self-reflection and adoption of new behaviours. \nWe start with measuring individual leadership behaviours through psychometric testing. We then work with participants to increase knowledge of transformational leadership behaviours. Using coaching techniques\, participants are helped to identify their leadership style\, strengths and areas for improvement. Day one ends with the development of individual goals related to improving leadership abilities. \nDay two is focused on examining the impact of culture on organisational effectiveness. Getting the culture right is critical to sustaining improvements. We explore specific situations that may be causing difficulty and look at ways to increase psychological safety and team engagement. Participants will learn how leadership impacts heavily on the culture of an organisation and recognise ways in which they can shape the culture and climate of the organisation they work in.

SUMMARY:West North West Lean Network: Lean Sigma Lunchtime Webinar (Online) - Control Charts - Part II
DESCRIPTION:Part II – Control Chart Calculations\, Tuesday 9th April 2019 @ 12 Noon\nThis is a follow-on webinar from the first session held in March. Following that webinar\, there were a number of requests to host a more detailed session on how to select and draw a control chart with the Upper and Lower Control limits. This session will also be hosted by IT Sligo lecturer Brian Coll. \nIf you missed the first session on Deming’s famous red bead experiment\, please view the recording here. During the first session\, we simulated a process\, gathered data and used a control chart to identify the difference between common cause and special cause variation. Deming called variation the ‘enemy’ and reducing variation is a key goal of Lean Six Sigma initiatives. \nDeming’s famous “Red Bead Experiment” is a hands-on way to understand variation in a fun and practical way. The late W. Edwards Deming was an American statistician who contributed greatly to Japan’s leadership in implementing statistical quality control after World War II. \nBrian Coll is a lecturer on Ireland’s largest online Lean Six Sigma yellow\, green and black belt programmes delivered by IT Sligo. He is the recipient of a national teaching expert award in online learning and has kindly agreed to deliver a lecture to our West NorthWest Lean Network members. \nPlease share this event with your friends and work colleagues. \nhttps://wnwlean-network-2.eventbrite.ie \nThe WNW Lean Network is an industry led business network from the West & North West of Ireland linked with 3rd level Academic Institutions and Chambers of Commerce. Their Mission is to promote Lean methodologies across all sectors and to share ideas that foster competitiveness for success.
