SUMMARY:Onwards and upwards: business opportunities and challenges for co-products from the meat processing chain
DESCRIPTION:With the importance of sustainable approaches continuing to increase\, the meat industry needs to continue their focus on optimisation along the production chain. One route to such optimisation involves maximising value within current commercial applications as well as the exploration of novel value-oriented applications. Capitalising on value driven applications for meat processing derived products (including by-products and co-products) provides an avenue to more sustainable processing from both environmental and economic perspectives. \nThis event will have speakers from various backgrounds: research\, industry or government agency. It will provide updates from an industry perspective in addition to a review of the research highlighting potential opportunities in order to move forward. In particular it will include updates from the BioOpps project which will present potential opportunities and challenges for certain meat co-products\, and ways to optimise their value with several applications. \nSession 1 will include industry speakers who will present the current state of the market of animal co-products\, and how they are facing challenges and opportunities in their field. \nSession 2 will have researchers speaking about new ways of utilising meat co-products\, thus recovering their value and optimising the entire processing chain. \nSession 3 will mainly focus on where do we go from here\, including a look at consumer perspectives and government agencies discussing the available supports.

SUMMARY:Going Lean in the Not-for-Profit Sector - Introduction & Case Study
DESCRIPTION:A breakfast introduction and case study about applying Lean in the Not for Profit Sector. \nAll Non-Profit Organisations will of course be lean\, but there is a world of difference between being frugal and applying the lean methodology. Being lean goes far beyond cost-cutting\, however. The lean process enables organizations to speed up\, be more competitive\, and build the capability of their people to identify issues and improve their operations. From this they can increase capacity as they improve efficiency and effectiveness. \nThere is often a perception Lean can’t be applied outside of the manufacturing setting\, but this is changing thanks to many successful lean initiatives in services. \nHow can Lean be applied to Non-Profit organisations (NPOs) for often complex service delivery? \nThis breakfast briefing with introduce Lean and the Lean Mindset\, its possible applications in Non-Profits and we will hear a case study of a Lean project in the Human Services from Catherine McDonald of the Anne Sullivan Centre. \nAgenda \n8-8.30 Networking and Light Breakfast \n08:30 – 9:00 A brief introduction to Lean and it applications in the Non-Profit Sector \n09.00 – 09.30 A Case Study: Catherine McDonald – The Anne Sullivan Centre \n09:30 – 10.00 Q & A\, Wrap up & Networking \nStuart Nelson BA (Psych); Lean & Six Sigma Black Belt (Jigsaw Consulting) \nStuart works with organisations to solve problems and enable them to develop a Growth Mindset.  Significant management and team leadership experience is combined with over 8 years coaching\, training\, and consulting.  Recognizing the critical role of the individual in Lean improvements\, Stuart completed psychological research into the leader’s role in team engagement\, learning and openness to change.  The findings of this research have been presented at academic and professional conferences.  Stuart holds Black Belts in Lean and Six Sigma along with 3rd level qualifications in Psychology\, Coaching\, Innovation and training.  He is an approved provider of the Enterprise Ireland and IDA Lean offer. \nCatherine McDonald MSc (Anne Sullivan Centre) \nCatherine has 13 years leadership experience in the not-for-profit sector. Having completed her training in lean six sigma in 2016\, Catherine supported her organisation to reduce inefficiencies and increase the engagement of its people through the development and implementation of lean principles. The development of a continuous improvement and quality mindset among the organisation’s management and staff teams has since led to significant organisational improvements. Catherine has a unique skill-set\, with third qualifications in social care\, health promotion\, management in the human services sector and organisational behaviour. She is a member of the British Psychological Society\, a certified psychometric testing professional and is currently completing her studies in leadership coaching. \nAnne Sullivan Foundation & Centre \nThe Anne Sullivan Foundation (ASF) is a national organisation that was established to help children who are deafblind throughout Ireland. It was established in 1989 when a group of concerned parents and friends realised that there was no centre in Ireland dedicated to support children who are deafblind and their families. Since then\, it has helped many people who are deafblind and their families in Ireland by funding care\, advocacy and outreach programmes. \nThe foundation was named in tribute to Anne Sullivan (1866-1936)\, the Irish-American teacher\, best known for being the educator and companion of Helen Keller. Helen Keller\, author\, political activist\, and lecturer\, was the first ever person who was deafblind to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. \nThe Anne Sullivan Centre residential service opened in 1996. Staff members works with service users to develop alternative forms of communication such as adapted and formal sign language\, concrete symbols and pictures. Specialist trained staff aim to facilitate our adults to pursue    meaningful\, active and fulfilling lives through a range of leisure   activities and community outings. Since 1997\, the Anne Sullivan Centre has purchased four houses and built two apartments for residents- this reflected an effort to move toward a less institutional model of care and promote the independence of service users. \nSince 2010\, the Anne Sullivan Centre has also provided Outreach\, Day\, Respite\, Training and Advocacy Services \nI’m interested but can’t make the 25th!

SUMMARY:Introduction to Embodied Carbon Calculation
DESCRIPTION:This free webinar will introduce attendees to the concept of embodied carbon calculation in buildings\, Environmental Product Declarations\, Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing\, and how this can be linked to Building Information Modelling. \nThe Irish Green Building Council has launched an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) programme as a first step towards mainstreaming the Life Cycle Assessment of buildings where the impacts of each stage are considered. EPD provide the data that enables the calculation of embodied Carbon and other impacts associated with the construction of buildings. EPD\, embodied carbon calculation and Life cycle assessment follow European standards EN 15804 and EN 15978. The use of BIM enabled software such as One Click LCA speeds up the process of calculation to the standards and allows designers to evaluate the carbon footprint of the building for different design concepts. \nSpeakers \nMs Tytti Bruce-Hyrkas (MSc) is a building LCA expert with personal experience from over 100 buildings and Infrastructure LCAs. She is also a developer of One Click LCA– the highest rated LCA tool for BREEAM. She teaches yearly approx. 200 certification professionals\, other sustainability experts and university students around Europe to use building LCA. \nPat Barry is the CEO of the Irish Green Building Council. IGBC have recently established a national Environmental Product Declaration programme to allow local producers to declare the impacts of their products. Pat is an architect with over 20 years’ experience in the construction sector in Ireland Europe and South America. He has an MSc in Environmental Design of Buildings from the University of Cardiff\, is a qualified Passive House designer and a qualified DGNB assessor.

SUMMARY:ISO Ireland
DESCRIPTION:International Standards make things work! Providing world-class specifications for products\, services and systems\, to ensure quality\, safety and efficiency. They are instrumental in facilitating international trade. \nDeveloping this unique event for over 3 years\, ISO Ireland 2018 will look at a combination of four symbiotic ISO standards\, including; 9001\, 14001\, 45001 & 50001. This multi-stream event will encompass over 36 speakers across 8 streams and gather over 750 business professionals considering the implementation/migration to these standards: Quality\, Environmental\, OHS and Energy. \nISO 9001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system (QMS). Organizations use the standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. It is the most popular standard in the ISO 9000 series and the only standard in the series to which organizations can certify. \nISO 14001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system (EMS). It provides a framework that an organization can follow\, rather than establishing environmental performance requirements. \nPart of the ISO 14000 family of standards on environmental management\, ISO 14001 is a voluntary standard that organizations can certify to. Integrating it with other management systems standards\, most commonly ISO 9001\, can further assist in accomplishing organizational goals. \nISO 45001 is a new international standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S)\, providing a framework for managing the prevention of death\, work-related injury and ill health\, with the intended outcome of improving and providing a safe and healthy workplace for workers and persons under an organization’s control. \nThe ISO 50001 energy management standard is a proven framework for industrial facilities\, commercial facilities\, or entire organizations to manage energy—including all aspects of energy procurement and use. An energy management system establishes the structure and discipline to implement technical and management strategies that significantly cut energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions—and sustain those savings over time. Savings can come from no- to low-cost operational improvements. \nAt ISO Ireland 2018 we will bring together over 750 senior level management from Irish industry and business who are at various stages of implementing one or a number of these standards. Sectors include; Food processing\, Pharmaceutical\, MedTech\, Financial\, ICT\, Retail\, Services\, Government\, Local Authorities\, etc. \n
