SUMMARY:Mid-West Lean Network: Workshop 1 How to Start the Lean Journey
DESCRIPTION:The Mid-West Lean Network is now well established. It was set up to enable companies within the Mid-West region to learn about Lean\, share best practice\, improve their Lean undertakings and to facilitate member-to-member networking. \nWe have learnt in the past year that many companies\, particularly SMEs and the smaller micro enterprises\, have not yet started on their Lean journeys\, either through lack of resources or lack of expertise. \nThis workshop\, the first in our 2018 series\, will start at the very beginning: \n1. Explain what Lean is all about…in any area of a company;\n2. Give case examples (2) of how a company can embrace Lean and;\n3. Highlight the types of support available to adopt and undertake Lean. \nThe Mid-West Lean Network: the second largest regional lean network in Ireland\, after Waterford Institute of Technology’s Lean Enterprise Excellence Group\, was set up in November 2016 to strengthen and increase the existing culture of lean within the Shannon and the wider Mid-West region. Its aim is to enable each industry to broaden and strengthen its competitiveness through knowledge sharing and bench-marking against each other and different industries.

SUMMARY:WIT Lean Practitioner Seminar Series 2017-2018 - 5th Seminar - The LEAN Maintenance Journey
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar Joe O’Sullivan discusses the identification and implementation of a Lean Maintenance program. Although the application of lean tools\, techniques and thinking has grown in popularity in organisations\, there is limited information on how best to integrate lean thinking into an existing maintenance program. Advances in artificial intelligence and robotics have created challenges for both Lean and Reliability Engineering models. This seminar will explore the benefits of amalgamating Lean and Reliability Engineering and proposes a Lean Maintenance roadmap that arguably could be adopted by any maintenance department. \nAbout the speaker \nJoe O’Sullivan served his time as a Fitter Turner with the Irish Sugar company in the 1980s. As a Maintenance Manager he has coached and mentored teams of maintenance practitioners over the past 20 years in both the electronic and pharmaceutical industries. He currently holds a Master of Business Studies in Lean Practice from Waterford Institute of Technology; a Master of Science Degree in Maintenance Engineering & Asset Management from University of Manchester; a Graduate Diploma in Management from University of Edinburgh; and a Diploma in Management from University of Limerick. He is currently secretary of the Japanese Karate Association of Ireland\, which successfully hosted the World Karate-Do Championships in August 2017. His role model both in business and in his personal life is Stephen R Covey.

SUMMARY:Business Model Innovation with Stuart Nelson of Jigsaw Consulting
DESCRIPTION:A business model describes the rationale of how an organization creates\, delivers\, & captures value! \nBusiness models can best be described through nine basic building blocks that show the logic of how a company intends to make money. The nine blocks cover the four main areas of a business: customers\, offer\, infrastructure\, and financial viability. The business model is a blueprint for a strategy to be implemented through organizational structures\, processes\, and systems. The nine business model building blocks form the basis for a handy tool\, which we call the Business Model Canvas \nWhy you should attend? \nToday\, everything is moving faster yet the business environment is more complex. Opportunities to grow are everywhere but are rarely obvious and innovation is key. Organisations need to understand their model and be able to pre-empt their competition. \nThis taster introduces business model thinking and the methods\, techniques and tools used to innovate business models. \nWho should attend? \nEstablished & growing businesses interested in understanding what business models are and how to use business model thinking\, methods and tools to increase their ability to generate revenue.

SUMMARY:Exploiting Groundwater Resources in Urban Africa: Understanding Choice and Consequences by Dr Adrian Healy
DESCRIPTION:This is the David Burdon Memorial Lecture delivered as part of the IAH Technical Discussion Meetings. \nAcross much of Africa\, domestic water supplies are increasingly dependent on groundwater reserves. Whilst\, the extent to which groundwater reserves are exploited is often a political choice as well as a technological one\, the role of private actors (such as households and businesses) is increasingly coming to the fore. \nThis nascent shift towards a distributed and increasingly individualised water supply may have implications for the resilience of communities to future environmental shocks\, which are\, as yet\, under-explored. Drawing on the case of Nigeria and new interdisciplinary research\, this lecture addresses that gap\, through a specific focus on understanding the behaviour and choices of individuals and other key stakeholders. \nThe findings offer insights for the delivery of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals\, as well as broader challenges for the sustainable management of groundwater reserves. \nAdrian Healy is a Senior Research Fellow at the Water Research Institute\, Cardiff University. His research interests focus on the resilience of people and places to shocks and crises\, with a particular emphasis on the role of agency and choice in resilience outcomes. His current research themes include exploring the development of groundwater resources in urban Africa and the implications of this for the resilience of communities. He recently completed a major project funded by the UK’s Research Councils examining the burgeoning development of privately-commissioned domestic boreholes in Nigeria. He has acted as an expert advisor to the UK Government\, OECD and the European Commission and is keen to ensure the policy-relevance of research findings.

SUMMARY:WIT Lean Practitioner Seminar Series 2017-2018 - 3rd Seminar - LEAN Accounting: Management accounting in LEAN Environment
DESCRIPTION:The presenters contend that traditional management accounting approaches are not relevant in a lean environment\, and can even be damaging to the lean proposition. Research suggests that traditional management accounting approaches\, in particular standard costing\, promote anti-lean behaviour that can undermine the value creation associated with lean. This seminar introduces the concept and practice ‘Lean Accounting’ – a management accounting approach designed to support and promote the lean transformation. Drawing from research and practice\, Sean and Collette will explore the challenges and opportunities commonly encountered when introducing and embedding lean accounting. \nAbout the speakers \nSean Cooney\, Head of Finance\, Cartamundi Ireland: Sean is a CIMA qualified accountant who has 25 years’ experience in senior finance roles with leading Irish multinationals. Throughout his career\, Sean has been responsible for developing high performing management accounting systems that have been to the fore in setting business priorities and driving performance. Sean has just graduated from the Master of Business in Lean Practice programme at WIT\, for which he completed his research thesis on the role of management accounting in a lean environment. Dr Collette Kirwan was Sean’s supervisor for the thesis. \nDr Collette Kirwan\, FCA\, BBS\, PhD\, Lecturer in Accounting\, Waterford Institute of Technology: Dr. Collette Kirwan qualified as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers where she subsequently worked as a manager in Audit Services. Collette first joined the School of Business at WIT in 2005. Over her career\, Collette has lectured at undergraduate\, postgraduate\, and executive education levels. Her main subject areas include financial reporting\, financial management\, and business research methods. In 2013 Collette was awarded her Ph.D from University College Dublin. SUMMARY:Essential Negotiation Skills
DESCRIPTION:This course demonstrates how to negotiate to a position of success. \nToo often a group will meet to negotiate an arrangement and fail to come to a reasonable position – entrenched positions will stop useful negotiation and poor use of interpersonal skills leads to “stand off” positions. Aggressive behavior wins out and the result is not implemented. \nThis course prepares attendees for successful win-win negotiations. \nIt gives a structure to preparing\, planning and implementing successful negotiations within the work place. It looks at tactics\, emotional intelligence and communication skills. Our reference is the Harvard Business model of Negotiation\, which is well known and recognised as Principled in type. It is judged by three main criteria. \nAny method of negotiation may be fairly judged by three criteria: \n\nIt should produce a wise agreement if agreement is possible.\nIt should be efficient.\nIt should improve or at least not damage the relationship between the parties.\n\nOn completion of this course participants will be able to:\n•Define negotiation\, influencing and bargaining\n•Identify the attributes of a successful negotiator\n•Improve discussion and effective communication\n•Be able to use a structured approach\n•Understand the role of personality and deal with tactics\n•Negotiate for resolution and consensus\n•Achieve closure \n\nSuitable for: \nPeople whose role involves reaching agreement with others\, who need to influence\, persuade or bargain .Useful also for people managers who seek to manage performance and in doing so may need to negotiate.

These learnings will be put in context to answer the ‘how’ of successful improvement initiatives with ITIL® Practitioner\, which is the next step after Foundation\, not a substitution. \nThis course is designed to teach you how to:\n•Use the foundational ITIL concepts that are important drivers for improvement initiatives\n•Apply the ITSM Guiding Principles of a service-oriented approach to IT\n•Apply ITIL’s CSI Approach in a given organizational context\n•Use metrics and measurements to enable improvements\n•Communicate effectively as part of improvement initiatives\n•Address the people side of improvements through the application of Organizational Change Management practices\n•Provide practical guidance on how individuals can leverage Continual Service Improvement (CSI)\n•Maximize the benefits of adoption and adaption of ITIL.\n•Improve the capability of individuals throughout the business.\n•Adopt and adapt ITIL in their day-to-day roles to generate maximum business benefits.\n•Make use of technological capabilities\, such as automation\, real-time reporting and Cloud computing.\n•Increase the quality of service design and the efficiency of service delivery.\n•Leverage other frameworks and good practices and methodologies – such as Lean\, DevOps\, Agile and SIAM – to further enhance the value of ITSM. \n  \n
