SUMMARY:Business Model Innovation with Stuart Nelson of Jigsaw Consulting
DESCRIPTION:A business model describes the rationale of how an organization creates\, delivers\, & captures value! \nBusiness models can best be described through nine basic building blocks that show the logic of how a company intends to make money. The nine blocks cover the four main areas of a business: customers\, offer\, infrastructure\, and financial viability. The business model is a blueprint for a strategy to be implemented through organizational structures\, processes\, and systems. The nine business model building blocks form the basis for a handy tool\, which we call the Business Model Canvas \nWhy you should attend? \nToday\, everything is moving faster yet the business environment is more complex. Opportunities to grow are everywhere but are rarely obvious and innovation is key. Organisations need to understand their model and be able to pre-empt their competition. \nThis taster introduces business model thinking and the methods\, techniques and tools used to innovate business models. \nWho should attend? \nEstablished & growing businesses interested in understanding what business models are and how to use business model thinking\, methods and tools to increase their ability to generate revenue.

SUMMARY:Exploiting Groundwater Resources in Urban Africa: Understanding Choice and Consequences by Dr Adrian Healy
DESCRIPTION:This is the David Burdon Memorial Lecture delivered as part of the IAH Technical Discussion Meetings. \nAcross much of Africa\, domestic water supplies are increasingly dependent on groundwater reserves. Whilst\, the extent to which groundwater reserves are exploited is often a political choice as well as a technological one\, the role of private actors (such as households and businesses) is increasingly coming to the fore. \nThis nascent shift towards a distributed and increasingly individualised water supply may have implications for the resilience of communities to future environmental shocks\, which are\, as yet\, under-explored. Drawing on the case of Nigeria and new interdisciplinary research\, this lecture addresses that gap\, through a specific focus on understanding the behaviour and choices of individuals and other key stakeholders. \nThe findings offer insights for the delivery of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals\, as well as broader challenges for the sustainable management of groundwater reserves. \nAdrian Healy is a Senior Research Fellow at the Water Research Institute\, Cardiff University. His research interests focus on the resilience of people and places to shocks and crises\, with a particular emphasis on the role of agency and choice in resilience outcomes. His current research themes include exploring the development of groundwater resources in urban Africa and the implications of this for the resilience of communities. He recently completed a major project funded by the UK’s Research Councils examining the burgeoning development of privately-commissioned domestic boreholes in Nigeria. He has acted as an expert advisor to the UK Government\, OECD and the European Commission and is keen to ensure the policy-relevance of research findings.

SUMMARY:WIT Lean Practitioner Seminar Series 2017-2018 - 3rd Seminar - LEAN Accounting: Management accounting in LEAN Environment
DESCRIPTION:The presenters contend that traditional management accounting approaches are not relevant in a lean environment\, and can even be damaging to the lean proposition. Research suggests that traditional management accounting approaches\, in particular standard costing\, promote anti-lean behaviour that can undermine the value creation associated with lean. This seminar introduces the concept and practice ‘Lean Accounting’ – a management accounting approach designed to support and promote the lean transformation. Drawing from research and practice\, Sean and Collette will explore the challenges and opportunities commonly encountered when introducing and embedding lean accounting. \nAbout the speakers \nSean Cooney\, Head of Finance\, Cartamundi Ireland: Sean is a CIMA qualified accountant who has 25 years’ experience in senior finance roles with leading Irish multinationals. Throughout his career\, Sean has been responsible for developing high performing management accounting systems that have been to the fore in setting business priorities and driving performance. Sean has just graduated from the Master of Business in Lean Practice programme at WIT\, for which he completed his research thesis on the role of management accounting in a lean environment. SUMMARY:Essential Negotiation Skills
DESCRIPTION:This course demonstrates how to negotiate to a position of success. \nToo often a group will meet to negotiate an arrangement and fail to come to a reasonable position – entrenched positions will stop useful negotiation and poor use of interpersonal skills leads to “stand off” positions. Aggressive behavior wins out and the result is not implemented. \nThis course prepares attendees for successful win-win negotiations. \nIt gives a structure to preparing\, planning and implementing successful negotiations within the work place. It looks at tactics\, emotional intelligence and communication skills. Our reference is the Harvard Business model of Negotiation\, which is well known and recognised as Principled in type. It is judged by three main criteria. \nAny method of negotiation may be fairly judged by three criteria: \n\nIt should produce a wise agreement if agreement is possible.\nIt should be efficient.\nIt should improve or at least not damage the relationship between the parties.\n\nOn completion of this course participants will be able to:\n•Define negotiation\, influencing and bargaining\n•Identify the attributes of a successful negotiator\n•Improve discussion and effective communication\n•Be able to use a structured approach\n•Understand the role of personality and deal with tactics\n•Negotiate for resolution and consensus\n•Achieve closure \n\nSuitable for: \nPeople whose role involves reaching agreement with others\, who need to influence\, persuade or bargain .Useful also for people managers who seek to manage performance and in doing so may need to negotiate.

SUMMARY:ESRI Seminar: “Water-based leisure activity: the benefits of good water quality”
DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Protection Agency recently reported a deterioration of water quality at hundreds of water bodies around the country between 2013 and 2015\, though there were improvements at a similar number of other water bodies. Just 21 sites achieved the highest quality rating compared to over 500 sites in the late 1980s. Water pollution has many impacts across the economy and society\, including the potential to hinder water-based recreational activity. \nThis research investigates how water quality can impact on recreational activity. Two analyses are undertaken. First\, recreational site choice decisions are examined; identifying the extent to which water quality levels at recreational sites affect the decision of which site recreational users begin their water based activity. This part of the research is confined to boating activity. Second\, recreational trip durations are considered; identifying the extent to which water quality levels at recreational sites affects the length of the trip. The premise here is that recreational users undertake trips of longer duration at sites with better water quality. Four categories of recreational users are considered in the trip duration analysis: anglers; boaters; those engaged other water sports (e.g. canoeing\, water skiing\, rowing\, etc.); and those engaged in activities for which access to water is not essential\, specifically walking and cycling. The results show that people engaged in water-based leisure activities are responsive to water quality conditions. \nSpeaker Bio: \nJohn Curtis is an applied micro-economist\, with a focus on energy and environmental policy issues. He manages the Research Programme on Socio-economics of Inland Fisheries and is joint programme coordinator for the energy and environment research area. John is a member of the Royal Irish Academy’s Climate Change and Environmental Sciences committee; inter-departmental working group on economics for the Water Framework Directive; inter-departmental Water Statistics Steering Group; and the ESRI-TCD Alliance Steering Group. \nJohn joined the ESRI in 2011\, and his former posts include lead economist at the Environmental Protection Agency\, economist at the Environmental Defense Fund (New York)\, and previously as a Research Officer at the ESRI. He has a PhD in Environmental Economics from the University of Maryland\, and both a BA and MA in Economics from UCD. \nJohn’s energy research focuses primarily on micro level issues such as residential energy efficiency but has also covered topics related to renewables integration and emissions. His energy research is published in journals such as Applied Economics\, Energy Policy\, Applied Energy\, Economics of Energy and Environmental Policy\, and Sustainable Cities and Society. On environmental issues his research has addressed topics related to water quality\, fisheries\, and resource management with papers published in journals such as Applied Economic Letters\, Journal of Environmental Planning and Management\, Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism\, Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics\, Agricultural and Resource Economics Review\, and the Economic and Social Review. \nAbout the ESRI Seminar Series \nThe ESRI organises a public seminar series\, inviting researchers from both the ESRI and other institutions to present new research on a variety of public policy issues. The seminar series provides access to specialised knowledge and new research methodologies\, with the objective of promoting research excellence and facilitating productive dialogue across the policy and research fields.

\nThe premise here is that recreational users undertake trips of longer duration at sites with better water quality. \n
